Clean Up day on mthe Colorado River

Saturday was the cleanup day on the
Colorado River so we volunteered to help. The river
corridor was clean from the summer but there's always some debris along
the river.
Kristina and I mostly found cigarette butts and aluminum cans and a few
flip flops. It was a beautiful day and it was rewarding to do our
little bit to keep the canyon clean. We saw some beaver and a eagle while we were out there.

Colorado River Runs did
adopt the Radium Road several years ago and I pick up stuff (cigarette
butts mostly) almost everyday.
I don't think we'll have any more trips this year so I'm drying and
polishing the boats and putting them away for the winter. It's too bad
that there's so littloe demand fpr rafting in the fall. The weather has
been beautiful and there's lots of water in the Colorado River. The rafts work hard all summer and need some TLC at the end of the season. It's amazing how resilient the Avon rafts are.

I've been advised to blog several times a month all winter so you'll hear from me soon. Bye for now.

River Safety on the Colorado River

The Colorado River rafting
season seems to be winding down, although we still have a month of
rafting. Once the kids go back to school, tourism drops off.
We've had a successful summer and that means no accident, incidents, or
calamities. River safety is our first goal, even more so that profit.
And safety includes both guests and guides. In fact, in 38 years of
operations we've never had a major accident. Not many rafting outfitters can make that statement.

River safety begins with the
life jackets we wear. Everyone wears a Type V Coast Guard approved PFD
(Personal Floatation Device). These jackets have a lot of buoyancy and
a floatation collar to support the head. Also, carefully choosing the
stretch of river to raft is a very important safety factor. We want
rapids, but not too much (no waterfalls!). We need appropriate boat
ramps for ingress and egress. We also screen our guests as to the type
of rapids they want to be in and what their capabilities are. We do not
allow children to participate in rapids higher than Class II.
You may have noticed that I'm posting photos from earlier in the
summer. My camera is broken and now I can't find it at all. S, you'll
have to settle for file photos.

Late season rafting on the Colorado River

The rafting
season is beginning to slow down. As soon as the kids go back to school
business drops off. It's unfortunate There is still lots of warm,
beautiful days left befor fall sets in. And still lots of water in the
river. We will have trips available all through the month of September.
My camera is broken so I'll post some of the best photos from our
summer on the Colorado River.
We met a lot of nice people this summer. Everyone was fun to be around.
I saw a mama bear and her cub yesterday while I was jogging with the
dogs about a mile from Radium. What a wonderful sight. Mama looked like
she was ready to ward off any threats. Fortunately, Sheephorn Creek was
between myself and her so she she didn't feel theatened. I managed to
watch them closely for quits some time. It's great to see such
magnificent creatures in the wild, especially so close to Radium. It
gives you an idea of how remote Radium is.

Ain little rain on the Colorado River

We saw some rain on our Colorado River
trip. We've had beautiful weather all summer so the rain was a
surprise. We bring rainwear on the trips so it wasn't a problem. In
fact, our guests had a great time. People do seem to rise to the
occasion. A lot of people say "we're going to get wet anyway" and
simply go on the raft trip and have fun.

The duckies have been prominate on our raft trips recently.
They're a lot of fun, and quite a bit more effort than being in a raft.

You get to be in your own little boat
with the rafts nearby for safety.
Our guests have been visiting with our donkeys every day. The donkeys
are so sweet and happy in their barn. The barn is 100 years old. The
donkeys are so fat. They are spoiled, too.

A Beautiful Day on the Colorado River

This will be another great day in Radium and on the Colorado River. There is not one cloud in the sky. The fact is, we've had the best weather all summer. Every day has been clear and hot.

Here's more recent guests
that have taken our rafting adventures. The whitewater
shot looks more exciting, but that's because we hit the wave at just
the right time.
The waves build as the river moves through them and eventually break.
This process occurs every five to ten seconds. If the raft gets there
just when the wave is breaking, everyone gets wet. It's really fun. Now
that the high water has receded, beautiful sandy beaches have appeared
along the river. it's nice to get out of the raft and wade in the water
and get some sun on the beach. I'd recommend that you bring suntan
lotion.

These are yesterday's guests with a picture of folks in a duckie and someone jumping from the 30" cliff into the Colorado River. I spent the afternoon with three generations of the Billings family & their friends Todd and Melissa & kids.
Nice people to raft with.

We had a great time & both families were graet fun to be with. If your reading this, I'm sorry I missed you after the rafting
trip. Duty called. And thank you for the "gift" that you left for me.
The Colorado River continues to be too much fun. the river still holds
a lot of water & it looks like it will for the rest of the season.
We've started with the duckies for the more adventurous with a few
spills so for. It's not dangerous being in the river now and we're all
in life jackets. Safety first, you know.

There are photos of yesterday's Colorado River
guests visiting the donkeys and a picture of the Encinatas Reds
baseball team The reds made it all the way from California to Steamboat
Springs for the Triple Crown baseball tournament. Then they went
rafting on the Colorado River.

The donkeys have been so sweet with our guests,
especially the kids. Every one loves them and wants to take them home.
We always take treats out so people can feed them. Lately it's been
carrots, strawberries and grapes.
The rafting continues to be great. We've been using the duckies
(inflatible kayaks) quite a bit and the boaters have been doing well.
We sometimes have to explain that the duckie doesn't take you through
the rapids, you take the duckie through the rapids.

All day trips on the Colorado River

Here's
a few pictures from the last couple of days including the Ingles
family. The Ingle's ventured out for the all day trip and you can see
how beautiful the day is.
The all day on the Colorado River has two canyons that we float thru. Most of the rapids are in the canyons.

Pretty much anytime a river enters a canyon whitewater
appears. The narrowing of the river causes the water to come under
pressure, and the only way to release this pressure is to form waves.
The water bounces off the canyon walls and causes more waves. There are
also sharp turns and big rocks that have fallen into the river.
have to be dodged. All these factors make the trip a little exciting,
but not in a threatening way.It's all just great fun, with safety
always in mind.

A little rain on the Colorado River

We had some rain on our Colorado River whitewater trip yesterday, but no one let it spoil the parade. We carry rain jackets when it looks stormy.

These are pictures of yesterday's rafting
adverturers. You can see that they're in rainwear and life jackets. In
addition to being a necessary safety measure, the life jackets can add
a lot of warmth when the weather's inclement.
My good friends Tim, Suzanne, Sylvia, Jill, & Clair were on the river trip
with us yesterday. I made some new friends, too. It was a great day even with a little rain.

Colorado River Whitewater Rafting

Hede's some more pictures from the last few days on the Colorado River, including a duckie in rapids. The inflatible kayaks
are called duckies because of the shape of the bow. It sort of looks
like a duck's bill.
The duckie's definitely for the more adventurous,
and not for young children. The duckies are smaller boats and a lot
closer to the water, so you get really wet. We like to know ahead of
time if you want to use a duckie.
The rapids on the Colorado River
continue to be great. We use Avon rafts, which are a little larger than
the rafts used by our other rafting companies. Avon is considered the
best manufacturer of rafts in the world. Because our rafts are larger
and sturdier, no one falls out in the whitewater. We hope to hear from
you soon.

The water in the river continues to set volume records and the river trips
continue to be great.
We're getting pretty wet on the trips but that's part of the fun. The
water is a little cold but that's part of the fun, too.
In addition to the rapids, our guests are jumping in to the river from
the 30 foot jump rock. Under our supervision, of course. A lot of the
guests seem to enjoy the jump, but it's not for me. I've never like
heights. It's just water for me.

We have 400PM departures available on the Colorado River.
This is a great time of day to be out on the river and is a favorite
with the guides. We have the river to ourselves and it has a feeling of
serenity and isolation. This feature is wonderful on the river. Until we get to the
whitewater rapids. Then the
excitement begins. The temperature is really hot. Something to do with
the sun being closer to the earth late in the day.
The reason we can schedule this and the reason there's no one else out
there is because we are the only locally owned raft company on the
upper reaches of the Colorado River. Our competitors have a long drive
to get their guests back to the resorts and since we're here we can do
early evening departures.
The wildlife appears at this time of day. We see deer, bighorn sheep
and lots of beaver. The reason I'm blogging about ths is because people
have sheduled on the 400PM trips for the last couple of days and have
had a wonderful time.
I tried to add pictures from the last couple of days but my
computer...... You know. I"ll blog again right now and see if they'll
publish. Keep your fingers crossed.

Fast times on the Colorado River.

When the Garza crew from Texas arrived for the Colorado River raft trip
yesterday, we knew we were in trouble. And they proved to be a handful.
We hope to never see them again. (Note to Jodi: I hope you know I'm
joking about this).
The guides had a great time and the Garza clan had a great time. Here
they are in all their glory.

The river is still high and the rafting is too much fun. The waves in the rapids
are bigger than we normally expect but that makes it more fun. The
waves are not the breaking waves that can hit the rafts hard, but big
swells that are a pleasure the go through.

These are the folks that rafted the whitewater

yesterday. That's the fabulous and beautiful Knoll sisters gracing us
with their presence. Notice our donkeys trying to get in the picture.
Pretty much all of our guests jumped into the Colorado River
from the 30 foot jump rock along the way. This the area that we know is
deep and everyone is safe.
The jump doesn't look very high from the river. But when you climb up
there it looks like looks like a long way down. It can be scary. I've
learned not to wait too long to jump. Once you've climbed up there the
river seems further and further away. Good times.

The Colorado River continues to have the best Colorado rafting trip. Our day trips go through two canyons, and both have great whitewater. While not condidered a heavy whitewater trip, the Colorado River has enough thrills to satisfy our guests.

Rafting is one of the most popular
summer activities in Colorado.
The reason is that rafting is so much fun. People are thrilled to be in
a boat that is driven by the river. And when the river narrows and
enters the canyon the fun really starts.
The narrowingof the river causes the water to come under pressure and
the only way the river can release that pressure is to form waves. A
series of these waves in called a wave train and is great to run
through in a raft. The water also bounces off the canyon walls and
causes more waves. What fun!

Colorado River whitewater adventure. Of course, when I say adventure I mean that everything was safe and fun.

The Colorado River us still as high as it's ever been in mid-July. The whitewater seems exciting at times, but these are easier rapids.
We pay close attention. Notice the PFD's (Personal Flotation Device)
the guests wear. The PFD can be your best friend on the river. Our
guides know how the make the rapids seem more exciting than they really
are.
This is a great trip for families, beginners and experienced rafters
alike.

High times on the Colorado River

Gabe went through the whitewater rapids on the front of the raft
and got really wet. He did great.

Notice how everyone's bundeled up in a life jacket? Even though the
whitewater on the Colorado River in this area is not considered
difficult, we pay close attention to safety.

The river moves thru a
deep, narrow canyon.
When the water in a river is forced through a narrow opening, it
compresses, resulting in waves and rapids. Many people believed rapids
are caused by rocks in the river, but it's more complicated than that.
Other factors are volume of water, degree
of gradient and features along the shoreline.

Colorado's Rivers

Colorado's Rivers are some of the best in the world for rafting.
When river outfitters look for a stretch of river to offer trips on,
certain features are required. Some gradient is needed, but not too
much. We
want rapids, but too much drop in elevation means danger, as in
waterfalls.
Rafting companies also require access points so we can get our guests to and from the river appropriately and safely. We don't want our guests climbling down steep embankments or getting hurt getting to the rafts.
Scenery & atmosphere is a important to Colorado River Runs.
Most of our competitors are based on I70 or other major highways, while
we have our location in a remote area beside the Colorado River. We
feel that a sense of wilderness is an important feature on a raft trip.

drive along the Colorado Headwaters Scenic Highway
to get to us. Our location in the historic ranch town in Radium gives

Fast Times on the Colorado River

Fast times on the Colorado River this summer. The runoff from last winter's snows have made this one of the best summers for whitewater rafting
ever.
I know I keep gushing how great the rapids are, but I can't stop. Our
guests are gushing too. I looked up "gush" in the dictionary and it
says "to flow forth suddenly in great volume", which is the river. It
also says "to make an excessive display of enthusiasm", which is what
the people on the river are doing. How appropriate! Don't get me
started on how much fun our guests have been. Everyone comes here ready
to get wet and have a good time. Sadie in the picture above was on her
first river trip and can't wait for more.

SUMMER ON THE COLORADO RIVER (SO FAR)

This has been a wonderful summer on the
Colorado River. Our guests have been great and appreciative of how our rafting operation works. They drive on country roads to a remote location beside the Colorado River.

As most of our competitors seem to move closer to I-70 and the traffic, we have our own little location beside the Colorado River.

The other day the Colorado River broke the record for the most water it's had in 30 years.

The whitewater rafting
has been great and it's gratifying to see our guests having such a
wonderful time. So many mention that they will never forget Colorado River Runs.

Big water on the Colorado River

Big water means there's volumes of water coming down from the mountains. We've never seen the Colorado River like this. Big water also means big fun & big waves. These are not breaking waves that cause the classification of the rapids to increase, but big swells that are great to raft through.

Colorado River Update

Both the Colorado River and the Eagle Rivers continue to run high. This has increased the fun and added to the whitewater on the Colorado River but made the Eagle to high to be rafting.

These are pics of our guests on the Colorado River from the last couple of days. That's me
with the oars under my knees in the photo to the right. Can you see that i'm
sucking in my tummy?

On the left above is Virginia and the girls doing their "intrepid explorer" imitation. This was Virginia's first raft trip and she loved it. The girls are really cute.

Gray skies earlier today bot now it's clearing and turning into a beautiful day for rafting in Colorado on the Colorado River.

We are so fortunate to have this much water in the river. This the most water since 1984! The rapids are fun but not too much.

Many people think that rain showers affect the level of the whitewater, But it's all based on the amount of snow Colorado received last winter. And that was a lot! Stop me if I'm using too many exclamation points.

Still seeing lots of critters including Eagles, Moose and bears.

Another great day on the Colorado River

Our guests are having too much fun rafting the Colorado River. The big
volume of water that's coming down from the mountains causes big waves
that are great to raft through.

Yesterday I spent the day with Kim Dyer
and her girlfrienda and their 6 teenage boys. Of course, I stuck Marty
with the boys and I had the ladies in my raft. What fun.

We've seen a
lot of wildlife this summer. Two days ago we we're right beside a young
moose. There are few moose around here, so it's great to see one from a
raft. I've seen more black bears this year that ever. I've seen 6 so
far, including several from the rafts. We're seeing lots of eagles too.

The Woodmers on the Colorado River

Woody and his clan returned to us for their third adventure rafting on the Colorado River. This was the Woodmer family reunion and everyone had a wet and wonderful time. Rafting is a great family activity.

Here's another pic of people having fun in the rapids on the Colorado River.
The volume of water adds excitement to the trip. But not too much
excitement. When a lot of water enters the Gore Canyon the river
compacts and starts bouncing off the canyon walls, causing swells and
waves. These are not the sharp, breaking waves that we see on more
difficult rapids. Instead they are 3 and 4 foot swells that are fun to
ride through.

More rafting on the Colorado River

Here's a picture of the first rapids as we raft the whitewater down the Colorado River.
This is a fun rapid with medium size waves but nothing too big. A
series of waves, one after the other, like this is called a wave train
and is caused by the river narrowing as it enters the canyon.
There is also a picture of the two dogs that inhabit our little ranch
in Radium. They're names are Bailey (the nearest one) and Lily. Bailey
is a fantastic frisbee dog and she entertains our Colorado River guests when they arrive in Radium.

Eagle River opens, Colorado River roars

We're finally open on The Eagle River. This is the latest we've ever opened, but the water has been too high. There's several bridges that we can't get under.

Meanwhile, the Colorado River is great with the highest flows. It's a fun trip for families, beginners, andd the experienced.

Eagle River Rafting

We're finally opening our rafting on the Eagle River near Vail.
The Eagle has great whitewater and is not for the faint of heart. We've
been waiting since late May for the river to recede so that it's safe
enough to run. Still there's big rapids on the Eagle River.

The Colorado River is still as high as it's been since 1984. People are
having a great time. The river is not as rough as the Eagle River, but
we still pay close attention to safety. The Colorado is our family
trip.
I'm still having trouble posting photos. I'll havre Kristen come and
look at my computer.

The town of Radium on the Colorado River

Here's a map on how to get to Radium. Our base of operations at Radium makes Colorado River
Runs the only locally owned rafting companyon the upper reaches of the
Colorado River.
Radium was established as a ranch homestead in the late 1800's. Some of
the old buildings still stand, including the 100 yr old barn and the
one room schoolhouse. We also have a donkey sanctuary here. The donkeys
are fat and sweet.
Our rafting guests really enjoy coming to Radium
from the glitsy resorts. It's like stepping back in time. You should come and visit.

Donkeys don't go Rafting

Snow near Steamboat last night and it's raining too hard to go on the
Colorado River. I'm tryting to reach our scheduled guests hoping to postpone today's trips.
This a photo from last week with our guests with one of our three donkeys. Her name is Pearl and she was born here beside the Colorado River. And, no, donkeys don't go whitewater rafting.
The donkeys are great to have around. They live in the 100 year old
barn. It's wonderful to see how loyal they are to each other.

Another day of Colorado Rafting

Today is our first busy day of the rafting season. We have over 40
people reserved for the day.

We do try to avoid large groups because it detracts from the trip. So
we've separated the parties
into 2 groups of 18 & 1 party of 9.

I'm stuck driving the bus to the
Colorado River launch site, so I may not get to be on the raft trip.

Sunday on the Colorado River

Yesterday was fun. We rafted on the Colorado River with my friend Kurt. We vwent from the Pumphouse recreation Area to the Radium Recreation Area,
which is right across the Colorado River from our base of operations.
The photo is Miya & her dog Charlie, Dalton and myself with the
sign for our "adopted" road to Radium. This road is one of the cleanest
in Grand County.
Today we have 15 guests. The guides are Miya and Nick, so I don't get
to raft. I'm the bus driver.
The guests are having a great time.
We're not rafting on the Eagle River due to high water and hazards. It may be several weeks before we can raft there again.

No commercial trips are scheduled today, but we'll be rafting with friends. The Colorado River has so much water in it, that whitewater rafting
is at it's best right now.
I forgot to mention yesterday that we saw a black bear while rafting
with guests. The bear seemed small, maybe a yearling. Sorry, I didn't
get pictures. I need to be quicker with my camera.
This is Dalton, a new guide. He thinks he'll be great at guiding. He probably will.

The donkeys that live in Radium

Many people don't understand how wonderful donkeys are. We have three
of them in Radium and they are great to have around. They're kind &
gentle & low maintenence. It's great to see how loyal they are to
each other.

Today we had a great time on the Colorado River with the Kirk family
(Yes, his first name was Jim). The Captain was one of the best paddlers
ever. No wonder Star Trek lasted so long.
Anyway, Gore Canyon on the Colorado River is a spectacular sight and
the rapids are really rapid.
The two girls (11 & 12 yrs. old) had fun in the front of the raft
and were pretty wet by the time the Colorado River trip ended.

The Colorado River is the closest raft trip to Winter Park, a scenic 90 minute drive along the Colorado River Scenic Byway.

The Colorado is a fun family float with deep canyons, high mountain vistas and easy rapids. The whitewater is rated Class II and II+ and river conditions are great all summer.

Everyone wears a fitted life jacket and a safety briefing is given prior to each trip. Two person inflatable kayaks, known as “duckies”, are available to the more active and adventurous members of your party.
